Labor Day weekend is here and we all know what that means – school buses on the roads at rush hour, getting the kids up early and out the door, and all the associated changes in our schedules. With the change of seasons and the coming of Fall, there are a few things you can do to make your life happier, or at least more organized. There are also some common sense things you should do as we prepare for colder weather…
Your living space is a good place to start. Getting a new paint color on the walls – even on a single room of your home – is a great way to start fresh in the new season. If you know you want a change, but don’t quite know what to do, give us a call and we’ll set you up with our in-house interior designer. We’ll give you all kinds of ideas you may not have thought of.
Next we go outside your home. The cold weather is right around the corner and it can be so hard on your exterior wood surfaces. If you have been putting off exterior painting, this is a great time of year to get it done.
There are also some other areas of your home you should consider as the seasons change. Fall means leaves…a lot of them! It’s a good idea to check out your gutters to make sure that they are all in tact and rightly secured. The weather and leaves of the Fall and Winter can be a real mess if you have damaged or missing gutters.
Lastly, I came across a great piece in Organized Home – there are some great tips for organizing your life this time of year. Check it out!

Williams Professional Painting has been in business for over 30 years. As such, we’ve seen just about every home decor scenario you can think of. But the most common by far is lack of color. We’re constantly going out to do estimates where we essentially have a blank slate – walls that are plain old white. Often it’s the same paint the builder put on the walls when the house first built. Even for some of the older homes in our area, white and off-white are safe choices, so we encounter them a lot.
Don’t be afraid of adding some some color!
When you call Williams Professional Painting, we can help you get rid of those plain old white walls and bring some color into your home. Just by adding a little color, you can change the entire look of a space. If you have trouble visualizing what the new color will look like, a consultation with our designer may be just what you need.
There is an interesting take on adding color over at HGTV – choosing colors is very much an art form, maybe a little science in there too!

We would like to welcome our new office manager, Yanize Justiniano. Yanize joined Williams Professional Painting last week and will be replacing Heather in the front office. Yanize has a vast amount of experience in customer service related work after working as a customer service representative and training others as well.
While we hate to see Heather leave we are excited for the new opportunities that await her with her new auditing position with the Federal government.
Heather will remain with us for a few weeks to help Yanize transition into the job.

Painting can be a messy endeavor. If you have a house full of kids and maybe a dog or cat running around, it can really get messy! But if you take some common sense precautions, you can save money by reusing many of your supplies and also finish the job without any mess to speak of. First, when you go to buy your brushes and rollers, you’ll find many options available to you. Find nice high quality materials because you can wash them out and reuse again and again.
While your painting, keep a wet rag or paper towel handy so that you can clean smaller spills or spots right when they happen. If you stay on top of the little things, you’ll finish the job cleaner (and happier!).
After a job is complete, promptly clean pans, brushes and rollers with soap and water. Don’t let them sit around for an hour before cleaning them out, or you’ll have quite a time with it. If you are using a sprayer, you may consider flushing the sprayer with mineral spirits to get all of the lines and valves thoroughly cleaned. Read the cleaning instructions on the sprayer for the best advice.
Lastly, disposing of paint is a big concern. Never pour paint of any kind down your drain or into a drainage ditch. Not only is it terrible for the environment, it can cause plumbing issues as well. Find out if your garbage collector will take the empty cans, or even better, take cans along with to be discarded paint to a community collecting facility. Most dumps and landfills have special areas for dropping off materials like these. If you’re unsure, call the local sanitation department.
Williams Professional Painting always leaves your home neat and clean after a job. We are also certified Lead-Safe, which means we have passed stringent requirements to handle the disposal of old paint. If you need a painting job done and don’t want to hassle with the supplies, work and clean up, just leave it to us!

We’re often looking for ways to make various rooms look better. Sometimes, we just get tired of the way a room looks. Something to consider is adding a chair rail or wainscoting. Either of these options can make a dramatic difference in how the room looks. Combined with fresh paint it’ll be like a complete re-decoration, even if that’s all you change!
Chair rail is an especially nice feature to add in a dining room. It adds a touch of class and decorative style that is hard to beat. For an added stylish touch, you can paint the walls above the chair rail a lighter shade, or perhaps add a faux design. The contrast turns an otherwise ordinary room look like you spent a fortune on a professional decorator.
There’s a good set of tips over at DIYNetwork about some of these techniques. Of course, whenever you need help with your interior painting, just give us a call.

Many people have asked how and why I started Williams Professional Painting. Our company started the way so many do. I married my childhood sweetheart in 1977.
Not long after I began working as a painter. After a particularly hard day in June of 1979 my boss and I decided I probably shouldn’t be working there. I quit, and then it all began.
I came home excited at the thought of starting my own company. When I went in to tell my wife of 2 years of my bright idea, she began crying and informed me that she found out that same day that we were expecting our first child. Bright move Dave and perfect timing. Right? Well actually it was.
I now had the motivation I needed to make this thing work. I was the painter and she was the new bookkeeper. All two of us (and one on the way) as the new employees of Williams Professional Painting. That was June 1979.
Over the past 31 years the company has grown to 30 employees with the child we were expecting when it all began as the Vice President. We have a reputation for quality and excellent customer service. We serve the Metropolitan area with interior and exterior custom painting for both residential and commercial clients.

Happy 4th of July! The festivities for so many of us included a favorite American pass-time: grilling. By 4:00 PM on Independence Day the delightful scent of barbecue wafted up and down most every street in the country, as citizens fired up their gas and charcoal grills.
While grilling is a great way to bond with family and friends (not to mention our favorite method of preparing steaks), it can also cause some serious damage to your home without some simple precautions. Damage to your siding and exterior paint are the most common and of course the risk of fire. Vinyl siding can warp and bend when exposed to the heat and the paint behind a grill can also chip and peel off very easily – you just need to make sure not to position that grill too close to your home.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that all grills be at least 10 feet from your home. This is especially important if you have your grill on your deck, where your grill may find itself positioned up against an exterior wall.
Of course it goes without saying that fire prevention should always be front of mind. Never throw hot coals into a trash can, take proper precautions when using and storing propane and never use a outdoor grill inside your home for any reason.
Enjoy grilling this Summer! We sure will…

This week marks our 31st year in business. Wow. 31 years ago we took on our very first painting customer – it seems like just yesterday. From that first job 31 years ago, Williams Professional Painting has grown into the premier professional painting service in northern Virginia. Our work has taken us from simple trim work to massive commercial painting jobs and everything in between. Although we have completed many different jobs over the past three decades, one thing has remained constant: our wonderful customers.
It is you, our customer, who means the most to us. You have allowed Williams Professional Painting to thrive for the last 31 years. You are the reason we approach each job as if it were the most important work we have ever completed. For helping to make Williams Professional Painting what it is today, we thank you.
